National Teacher’s Day is a day to honor the teacher in your child’s life and show appreciation for them. History of National Teacher’s Day
In 1944, discussion began between educational and political leaders to create a National Day to honor teachers. This discussion moved nowhere until Eleanor Roosevelt stood in front of Congress in 1953 in an attempt to persuade them to add it as a National Day. While her efforts proved in vain at first, after more discussion, National Teacher’s Day came to fruition in 1980. Ever since, we have been bringing much needed attention to the wonderful teachers across the United States for their work in helping to teach our children in preparation for their futures.
Fun Facts about National Teacher’s Day
- The practice of giving teachers apples came from 16th to 18th century traditions of giving teachers baskets of apples and other foods to help compensate for the poor wages
- The apple tradition began in Denmark and Sweden

- There are over 3 million teachers today in the United States for age ranges K- 12th grades. For reference, there are over 56 million students.
