Taken was one of the first movies to bring widespread attention to the horrors of human trafficking. While we do not doubt that it accurately portrays a father’s love and his will to do anything necessary for his daughter, we can confirm that Taken as a whole does not portray an accurate representation of human trafficking.
What did catch our eye was what Taken did correctly. The movie does take a peek into the intricacies of international human trafficking, such as persuasion by a supposedly kind, international man who offers help. However, the movie fails to showcase some of the true horrors of human trafficking and also only shows one of the many ways children can be abducted. In fact, a sudden kidnapping from a complete stranger is only 24% likely to happen.
It then leaves the question, what to do if you want to learn about the true horrors of the human and sex trafficking trade or domestic violence for awareness? We have compiled a list of movies below, including where to watch them, their rating on sites such as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, and our rating with a short description of the movie. Please be warned all movies on this list contain an explicit warning due to their content. We also highly recommend not watching more than one of these recommended movies in a day (or even a week) due to their highly disturbing nature.
It’s about time we shed the light on these horrors. Learn how you can help by clicking the links associated with each film.
