May 2024 – A new Android specific RAT is discovered by the technology and coding company, Cleafy, and it was nicknamed BingoMod. This discovery soon led down a trail so deep that it is still evolving today to take over Accounts then clean up the trace to leave no evidence it was there in the first place. What else can it do and how can we protect against it?

What is an Android RAT?

RATs, or Remote Access Trojans, are a type of malicious software (or malware). This software latches onto seemingly legitimate Apps or video games and then deploys once downloaded. The malware then is used to gain full administrative privileges and remote control of the device, such as one would use a remote control to operate a drone.

What does BingoMod do?

BingoMod moves quickly but quietly to initiate bank transfers and scan for typical purchasing behaviors to avoid detection. The malware then leverages various permissions to steal SMS messages, credentials, and current account balances. Once finished, the device is wiped of any trace, making it difficult to conduct any forensic investigations. It also has the ability to block the activity of some security apps to prevent detection.

How do we stop it?

The best way to prevent downloading BingoMod is to research any Apps prior to downloading them. By researching useful apps such as protection apps, games, and others, you can ensure the Apps are tried and true and will not bring destruction.
